This is most definitely NOT what Belize needs right now. After arriving in Belize City this afternoon, the local buzz in town is a jerk named Felix who is currently causing trouble near Aruba and Bonaire. When Hurricane Dean made landfall near the Belize-Mexico border near Majahual, Mexico a few weeks ago, it was a Category 5 storm. Check-out the clippings from a local paper of some of the coastal impacts along the Costa Maya. Wind gusts of 200 mph (320 km/h) were reported. The storm wreaked havoc in state capital Chetumal, some 65 km south of landfall, causing significant flooding.
While Southern Mexico took the brunt of Dean's Force, the Northern Corozal district of Belize sustained considerable damage as well. Following an on site inspection on August 22nd, Belize Prime Minister Said Musa declared the Corozal District a disaster area. I'll be meeting on Monday with project partners who are up in Corozol this weekend working on recovery and rebuilding efforts.Certainly, Belize could use a reprieve from a second Hurricane in less than two weeks. And I have no interest in experiencing a hurricane first hand at sea level.
