The Great Tragedy Of Science - The Slaying Of A Beautiful Hypothesis By An Ugly Fact

Remember this image above? I thought it was bone from a fish and suspected it was a jaw part or other mouth related structure--in large part because the tooth-like projections on the left look like, well... like teeth. Nope! Not even close.

Check out this image. Can you locate the object from above?

How about now?

Turns out the object is a bone from a spadefish.

It certainly is a very unusual looking structure. Many thanks to Wendy Allen, Manager of the North Inlet-Winyah Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve in Georgetown, South Carolina. She is now the first to enter the raffle for a FREE copy of the new DK book Reef. There's still a bony object yet to be identified, so take a chance. You've got nothing to lose and a beautiful book to gain. And if mystery bones are not your cup of tea, I'll throw in one last mysterious ocean object below to sweeten the contest.

The above object measures approximately 12 inches in diameter and was found washed ashore on a beach in North Queensland, Australia. Same rules apply: guesses must be accompanied by some form of verifiable evidence. Correct guesses go into the hat for the book raffle. Good luck!
