Ocean Blog-Around

Since it's a typically crazy Monday (compounded by the fact that this is the first day back for everyone at the office following the holidays), I don't have time to pull together a quality Moray Monday post. But ooh baby, do I have a good one that I'm cooking up! Tune-in next week for the latest moray news.

But there's still plenty of great salty stuff to which I can link that can give you your ocean fix. To wit:

The ever prolific Miriam Goldstein, of The Oyster's Garter fame, will soon be published in the Open Laboratory 2008: The Best Science Writing on Blogs! Damn her and her compelling writing! How am I supposed to get people reading about coral reefs when she's cranking out gold over on her blog about crummy little coccolithophores! Seriously though, it's a great piece and we should all be proud that one of our own ocean folk makes good. How you feeling about all those dead trees though, Miriam?

No slouch in the writing arena herself, quasi-ocean blogger Karen James over at The Beagle Project Blog will also be included in the Open Lab 2008 anthology for her fabulous piece, Detecting Natural Selection: A Pica's Tale. Both Miriam and Karen have earned their first free pints when we gather later this month In North Carolina for the Science Online 09 Science Blogging Conference.

As if that's not enough, Mark Hall over at The Biomes Blog is hosting the 20th (yes, 20th!) Carnival of the Blue, the monthly round-up of some of the best ocean writing on the blogosphere. Mark does a fantastic job of gathering your monthly dose of all things marine, including a post from yours truly.

Finally, you may have noticed that Angelo over at The Saipan Blog broke the news that President Bush would announce tomorrow (Tuesday, January 6 at 1PM EST) his intentions on the status of a Mariana Trench Marine National Monument. Angelo himself is en route to Washington DC to be present at the announcement. Pretty exciting stuff!

You may recall that Angelo has spent this last year working to make a CNMI marine monument a reality. The Coral Reef Alliance also formally endorsed this marine conservation effort and offered assistance last month through a letters campaign to the President. We'll have to wait until tomorrow to see precisely what sorts of protection will actually be designated.

Regardless, congrats to Angelo and the Pew team for making this a reality!
