Damn You, Jason Robertshaw!

Damn you straight to hell!

Be warned. Spending time with Jason--he of the remarkable blog Cephalopodcast and other online wonders--is a sure way to put a dent in your wallet. His fascination with technology is contagious! Case in point: Jason was flashing this cool micro digital video camera when we were at the National Marine Educators Association conference in Savannah. It's called the Flip Mino by Pure Digital and it's too cool for school. Tiny, 2 gigs of memory, 60 minutes of record time, USB connection built-in, and it syncs seamlessly with Apple applications or you can use its on-board video software. What more can you ask for to add simple, pocket-sized video to your website or blog?

Thanks for the heads-up on this, Jason. I hope to start adding my own video to MBSL&S in the very near future.

Seriously! Ever since I met Jason in January at SciBlogCon, I have been thinking about the iPhone EVERYDAY. If it wasn't for the $60/mo. charge, it would be so mine right now. So very mine, especially 3G. Why... why...

Hype aside, the iPhone has been the most satisfying technology purchase I have ever made. I feel like I get value out of every penny of the monthly fees.

We used the Flip in a recent technology camp at work. It is very easy to use, having only three functional buttons: play, record and delete. The kids seemed to take to it quickly and it was simple to upload to their laptops. It does not provide broadcast quality video, but it is great for posting vids to the computer screen, YouTube and other Web site. After a couple weeks of use I do have one word of caution. It is VERY easy to scratch the plastic case in front of the lens/CCD. I recommend hanging on to the little pouch that came with it and using it religiously. It also serves as a lens cloth, it is so soft.

And now that you have made the purchase, you will be happy to know that Kodak has apparently come out with a superior but equally easy to use competitor to the Mino. Sigh.

Jason's review of underwater camera tech in a recent podcast was a huge help to a lot of our divers and visitors. I've been sending out that link left and right.

Brava for technology!
Brava for teaching!

Boo to not having any money to purchase his recommendations.

I gotta go dial my rotary phone ...
